Driving To Perfection more than a slogan for Jetco’s drivers, staff

Late last year, Jetco embarked on a program to further enhance the importance of safety in all of its operations.

The program, known as Driving To Perfection or D2P, was developed by Jetco’s employees as a means to stress the significance of personal responsibility for safe operations in the company and to enhance the many training and safety initiatives already underway throughout the organization.

Implementation of D2P followed a presentation in September by Jim Schultz, a former executive vice president at Waste Management who now runs the Jim Schultz Group, a safety consultancy for firms in the transportation industry.

Schultz, who developed similar programs at Waste Management and in roles at other companies, said D2P is the perfect vehicle for further solidifying the relationship between Jetco and its valuable customers.

“Good companies are increasingly demanding more when it comes to their business partners, especially in the transportation industry,” Schultz said. “More and more, companies are basing their hiring decisions on safety performance.

“Safety is the ultimate benchmark. Companies aren’t looking for the cheapest means of transportation, they’re looking for the safest and most efficient. Price isn’t the primary determining factor any longer because safety is the key.”

Schultz said programs like D2P are important determining factors in helping companies choose a transportation provider because they encourage the trucking company to stress the significance of hiring courteous, professional drivers, keeping trucks clean and focusing on getting cargo to its destination safely and efficiently.

“It certainly establishes Jetco as a champion, and people love to do business with champions,” he said.

Schultz added that perhaps the greatest benefit from implementing a safety program like D2P is the effect that it has throughout an organization.

“Driving To Perfection provides the structure, discipline and standards upon which all operations will rally,” he said. “While the program addresses safety specifically, it will have an enormous impact on Jetco as a whole. Customers will definitely be the ones to benefit from D2P.”
