CONTINUED SAFETY SUCCESS
For its continuing efforts to promote safety throughout its operations, Jetco received the 2009 Texas Mutual Safety Award last week - a recognition that has been bestowed on only 62 of the insurer’s more than 48,000 policyholders.
In making the award, Texas Mutual lauded Jetco for its involvement in networking with other transportation companies to develop best practices for employee safety and heightened employee safety awareness. It also said Jetco stood out from other companies because of its worksite hazard identification and control and its innovative safety programs.
“When a company wins an award like this, it’s an outward display to customers and to employees and employee’s family members that Jetco is doing the things that need to be done in order to run a business well,” said Robert Box, supervisor of underwriting and loss prevention in Texas Mutual’s Houston regional office. “Jetco has made safety it’s No. 1 priority. That’s important for its customers because when you take care of employees you’re going to have a safe and healthy workplace. That leads to happy and productive employees which in turn leads to sustaining a business that serves customers in an effective and meaningful way. That’s what Jetco does so well.”
Brian Fielkow, Jetco’s president, said the award is a testament to the professionalism of everyone who works in the organization.
“We are honored to have been selected by Texas Mutual for this outstanding award,” said Brian Fielkow, owner/president of Jetco Delivery. “The people who made this honor a reality are the men and women who drive and dispatch our trucks, work in our warehouse and interact with our customers each day with safety as their focus.”
Hubert Flores loves interacting with people. In his role as account manager in sales and marketing at Jetco, he gets that chance everyday as he meets with customers to discuss their ongoing shipping and transportation needs.
“I like the challenge of this job,” Flores said. “I love interacting with folks. It seems that most of the time, when I walk into a customer’s office, I get a hug not a handshake. I don’t just sit down and talk business with them. I want to know how our customers are really doing. I care about them personally. In my opinion, when you get to know a person rather than just going in to do a sale, it’s so much more enjoyable because you’re building a long-term relationship.”
Flores has spent more than 20 years in the trucking, working as a driver, in customer service and dispatch. He still holds a commercial driver’s license with a hazmat certification and he believes that gives him an advantage when he meets with customers.
“I can drive up to a facility, take one look at the freight in the yard and know how we can help a customer,” said Flores, who is a Texas native and has lived in Houston for nearly 40 years. “Coming up with a solution for customers is invaluable.”
When he’s not meeting with customers or at Jetco’s offices, Flores loves to spend time with his wife and three children.
“We like to barbecue and just spend lots of family time together,” he said.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SafeStat system that measures safety of motor carriers is being replaced next year with a more comprehensive program aimed at improving the overall accuracy of safety statistics.
Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) will take affect in January and covers the full spectrum of safety issues - from how data are collected, evaluated and shared to how enforcement officials can intervene most efficiently and effectively to improve safety on the nation’s roads.
CSA 2010 will capture all on-road safety performance data (all safety-based roadside violations and crash data) and classifies it into seven specific categories of carrier/driver behavior including unsafe driving, fatigued driving (hours of service), driver fitness, controlled substances/alcohol, vehicle maintenance, cargo related and crash indicator.
For information on CSA 2010, please visit http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/csa2010
For now, you can still access SafeStat results can be found at http://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov. Clicking on the “SafeStat Online” button provides you with the ability to find detailed SafeStat results for all interstate motor carriers.
New measurement system to replace SafeStat
Diesel price rollercoaster continues
The price of a gallon of diesel fuel has declined more than 7 cents over the past four weeks, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
While that’s good news for the many in the trucking industry - which has been subject to volatile price fluctuations in the cost of diesel over the past two years - it doesn’t necessarily mean that prices have stabilized. When contacted by Transport Topics because of Jetco’s position as a prominent regional carrier, Brian Fielkow, president of Jetco Delivery, told the publication that Jetco is focused on what it can control, such as providing solid customer service, rather than concentrating on fuel price spikes.
“All we’re trying to do is just play the hand we’re dealt and make the most of it and stay very optimistic,” Fielkow said. “It’s very important that our customers know current diesel prices and understand how those fluctuations can affect rates.”

He added that Jetco has plans in place to replace some of the trucks in its fleet over the next year but that the company is carefully weighing when to do so to make the right decisions regarding fuel efficiencies. “That’s why it’s really important to know what you’re looking at, analyze as best you can before you buy it,” he said. “We want the most energy-efficient, cleanest-burning truck.”
